Episode 396: Heol Fanog – The Welsh Amityville

The remote farmhouse known as Heol Fanog is nestled among the Brecon Beacons mountain range in Wales. Built in the 1950s in an area rumored to have a history of witchcraft, the house became infamous in the late 1980s when Liz and Bill Rich moved there with Bill’s teenage son. Shortly after settling in, the family claimed, unsettling paranormal activity began to occur, including disembodied footsteps and snoring, ridiculously high electric bills, horrible odors, doors slamming by themselves, and farm animals mysteriously dying. Eventually, Bill began going down a dark path, becoming interested in the occult, and not long afterward, the activity ramped up, graduating to terrifying apparitions and even a possible succubus. The house underwent many exorcisms that seemed to partially alleviate the problem, but the Rich family had had enough and fled the house about seven years after they’d first moved in. Join Tom and Jenny on a ghostly journey through the spooky Welsh countryside on a supernaturally special episode 396.

Episode 360 LIVE: Demon House – The Ammons Haunting

Back in 2011, the Ammons family in Gary, Indiana reported some alarming paranormal activity taking place in their home, including unexplained swarms of flies, strange noises, levitations, disembodied and threatening voices, and shadowy figures. Believing the manifestations were demonic in nature, the family had several exorcisms performed but eventually ended up moving away. The case was high-profile enough to attract the attention of Zak Bagans of Ghost Adventures, who purchased the house in 2014 and made a documentary about the haunting titled Demon House before having the place demolished. Join Tom and Jenny on a supernatural journey into spiritual evil on this mysterious and malevolent installment of 13 O’Clock.

Episode 302 LIVE: Houska Castle and the Doris Bither Entity Haunting

It’s a paranormal extravaganza on this spooky installment of 13 O’Clock! First up, we’ll be discussing the mysterious Houska Castle, a 13th-century Gothic structure in the Czech Republic which was supposedly built over an actual gateway to Hell. Then we’ll return to the fascinating case of Doris Bither, who was the real woman behind the character of Carla Moran in the 1982 horror film The Entity. In 1974, Doris approached parapsychologist Dr. Barry Taff, claiming that her house was haunted, and further, that she’s been repeatedly sexually assaulted by the spirits dwelling in her Culver City, California home. Over the course of the investigation, a number of eerie photographs were taken that seem to suggest the presence of some inexplicable phenomena. Join Tom and Jenny as we travel down the bottomless pit and see what spirits we can unearth on a ghastly and ghoulish episode 302.

194: Poltergeists! The Black Monk of Pontefract and the Brother Doli Case

On this paranormal-palooza, Tom and Jenny are breaking down two of the U.K.’s best known poltergeist/haunting cases: the infamous Black Monk of Pontefract, which began at 30 East Drive in 1966 and is considered one of the most violent poltergeist attacks in Europe; and the so-called Brother Doli case, a strange outbreak in North Wales that included apparitions and bizarre writing appearing on the walls of the Gower family farmhouse. Get your ghost hunting gear ready, it’s about to get spooky on episode 194.

Episode One Hundred Twenty One: A Haunting Recap – The Demon Murder Case

It’s paranormal time again on this spooky installment of 13 O’Clock, and we’re finally going back to one of our popular discussions of an episode of A Haunting! This time, we’ll be talking about the season 2 episode entitled “Where Demons Dwell,” which details a possible haunting or demon possession in 1980 Connecticut. The case is also infamous in that it later led to the murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who tried to claim demon possession as his defense. We discussed the case briefly on our show about the Warrens, but we thought we’d revisit the topic and give it a bit more depth, including a chat about the 1983 TV movie based on the case (starring a young Kevin Bacon). So ready your rosaries and holy water as we go a-haunting on episode 121.

Episode Ninety-Six: Robert Stack Attack! A Wide-Ranging Tribute to Unsolved Mysteries

One of our favorite TV shows of the 80s and 90s was Unsolved Mysteries, particularly during the Robert Stack era. As the show was such a beloved touchstone for us and inspired us to make the 13 O’Clock Podcast the crazy combination of paranormal, true crime, and weird history stories that it is, we thought it only fitting to discuss this cultural icon on our own little show. On this tangent-filled and far-reaching episode, we get into a brief history of Unsolved Mysteries, some fun facts about the show, and a few of our favorite featured cases, including some that the show helped solve. We also weave in digressions about D.B. Cooper, Son of Sam, the Beale ciphers, the inaccuracy of witness testimony, and much, much more! All this, plus some awesome listener-contributed ghost stories in our news segment! So sit back and listen to this homage to a childhood favorite, and you may be able to help solve the mystery presented on episode 96.

Episode Ninety-Four: A Haunting Review – House of the Dead

It’s paranormal time again, and we’re returning to that wonderful wellspring of supernatural hijinks known as A Haunting. This time, we’re discussing the case of Billy Bean, whose story was told on episode 5 of season 2, titled “House of the Dead.” Billy moved into a house in Glen Burnie, Maryland with his family in 1970 when he was just seven years old, and before too long, some apparently nefarious force began targeting the Beans, causing violent poltergeist activity and the drastic personality change of Billy’s father. Join us as we run down the episode and the case, and also listen with amusement to our news story, in which we lament the darkly hilarious fate of a 2,000-year-old, extremely unlucky Pompeii resident. Poltergeists and demons and ghosts, oh my! It’s a high-spirited episode 94.

Episode Eighty-Seven: Borley Rectory (Plus Keith Linder Haunting)

On today’s spooky and tangent-filled installment of 13 O’Clock, we’re tackling one of the most famous haunted houses in the world, Borley Rectory. Built in 1862 and investigated by famed paranormal investigator Harry Price, the Victorian-style mansion was allegedly the site of all sorts of supernatural shenanigans, including the apparition of a ghostly nun, a phantom carriage with two headless drivers, numerous reports of footsteps and screams, and bizarre writing that supposedly appeared on the walls asking for help. All this, plus a brief rundown of the Keith Linder Demons in Seattle case, which is in the news again since a new book just came out about it (even though I already wrote one about it back in 2016, called House of Fire and Whispers). Put your haunting hats on and settle by the fire for a spirited discussion on episode 87.

NOTE: If you just want to hear about Borley Rectory, skip ahead to about 26 minutes in; we kinda went off on a bunch of digressions, haha.

Episode Eighty-Two: Serial Killer Herb Baumeister and the Haunting of Fox Hollow Farm

In 2006, Rob and Vicki Graves bought a beautiful restored mansion sitting on 18 acres, known as Fox Hollow Farm. The price was right, and the couple couldn’t believe their luck. But then, paranormal activity allegedly began to occur: They would hear unexplained knocking, feel presences, and see disturbing apparitions around the property. If Fox Hollow Farm is indeed haunted, as its current residents claim, then there is a very good reason. In the 1990s, the sprawling estate was home to Herb Baumeister, an Indiana businessman who is suspected of murdering more than twenty men and burying some of their remains on the farm. Tune in to this paranormal and true crime story all rolled into one, plus learn about a shitbag Arkasas judge who REALLY abused his bench on our news segment. Ghosts, serial murder, double lives, and predatory authority figures…all this and more on a super-sized episode 82 of 13 O’Clock.

Episode Seventy-Nine: The Winchester Mystery House, Plus American Horror Story House

On this episode of 13 O’Clock, we’re talking about what is probably one of the weirdest and ostensibly most haunted houses in the United States, if not the world: the infamous Winchester Mystery House. This sprawling, mazelike, 24,000-square-foot mansion was built by the widowed Sarah Winchester and contains many fascinatingly bizarre architectural oddities, including doors and staircases leading nowhere, skylights in the floor, and balconies that face indoors. Did Sarah really build this strange house in order to appease restless spirits? Or was she just an eccentric who liked experimenting with different architectural styles? Tom and Jenny discuss the gorgeous and allegedly haunted house, along with a news story about another possibly haunted house that was also, incidentally, featured on the first season of American Horror Story. Relax in your seance room and channel our voices as we bring you a ghostly episode 79.

Episode Seventy-Six: A Haunting at Allen House, Plus Kent Ghost Monk

Hooray, Tom is finally back! And to celebrate, we’re doing another one of our fun discussions of an episode of A Haunting…this one concerns the season 5 episode titled “The Haunting of the Allen House,” which is a reenactment of the paranormal shenanigans happening to the Spencer family after they purchase the infamously haunted house in Arkansas and subsequently discover a secret about a woman who committed suicide there back in the 1940s. Apparitions and doomed love affairs of the past abound! We’ll also be discussing a recent news story about a man who allegedly photographed a ghost at an English castle, so get your haunt on and tune in for episode 76.

Episode Sixty-Seven: The Sallie House Haunting

On this ghostly episode, we’re returning to our study of paranormal cases featured on the program A Haunting. This time we examine the infamous Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas, specifically the two-year residence of the Pickman family, who allegedly experienced objects moving around and catching fire, the sighting of apparitions, physical attacks, and strange personality changes. The haunting at the Sallie House has been attributed to the ghost of a seven-year-old girl and perhaps that of her angry mother, but accounts differ, and Tom and Jenny discuss the case and the way it was portrayed on A Haunting, trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. Put all your teddy bears in a circle and commune with the spirit of episode 67.

Episode Fifty-Nine: A Haunting in Georgia – Wyrick House and Mr. Gordy

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of our reviews of A Haunting episodes, so we decided to go back to the beginning and delve into the case behind one of the pilot episodes, “A Haunting in Georgia” (which was also the basis for the horror movie A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia). The Wyrick family begin to experience paranormal activity in their new home in Ellerslie, Georgia, mostly centering around their daughter Heidi seeing a friendly old man in the backyard who she called Mr. Gordy, as well as another man with blood on his shirt that she called Con. Later on, things got a bit more sinister with the arrival of a creepy hooded figure who seemed to wish the family harm. On this episode, Tom and Jenny talk about the episode of A Haunting as well as the witness accounts of the real case, and how it was (poorly) adapted to the big screen. Start your October off right with the ghostly, haunted 59th installment of 13 O’Clock.

Also, if you have a TRUE creepy story that happened to you or someone you know (it doesn’t have to be paranormal, just scary), please email it to me at gravecake@gmail.com and we might feature it on our special Halloween episode!

Episode Fifty-Four: Craig Nehring and the Haunting at Summerwind

Back on episode 39, we discussed the episode of A Haunting that dealt with the infamous Summerwind Mansion, not only said to be Wisconsin’s most haunted house, but also thought to be one of the most haunted locations in the United States. Now, on episode 54, we are honored to be talking with Craig Nehring of the Fox Valley Ghost Hunters, who not only wrote a book called Wisconsin’s Most Haunted which featured Summerwind, but has also investigated the property several times and is helping to raise money to have the mansion restored to its original spooky glory. Put on your ghost hunting hats and tune in for a fun, creepy discussion about one of the country’s most infamous haunted houses. Check out the Fox Valley Ghost Hunters website and join the Summerwind Restoration Society group on Facebook! If you want to help get Summerwind rebuilt, contribute to the Summerwind Restoration Society GoFundMe. And here is the official ordering page for Craig’s book, Wisconsin’s Most Haunted.

Song at the end: “Somewhere Under Summerwind” by Walpyrgus.

Craig Nehring is from Minocqua, WI and lived in that area for 30 years. He lived very close to Summerwind Mansion and saw some inexplicable things there, and that’s how he got his start in ghost-hunting. In 2005 Nehring moved to the Fox Valley area. Around that time the ghost-hunting shows on television started to pop up all over the place, and Nehring decided to build his own team of investigators. His team’s first investigation was at an old hospital. In 2010 the Fox Valley Ghost Hunters were in the local newspaper, The Post Crescent, and this was only the beginning. Now in 2017, Nehring never thought they would be where they are. Some teams don’t like publicity or to be in the spotlight, but Craig is just the opposite. He wants the attention to get his team’s name out there. Mr. Nehring has a book called Wisconsin’s Most Haunted, which can be found on Amazon, and many other places as well. Currently Nehring is working on a second book of Wisconsin haunts with his co-author Enid Cleaves. In addition he is writing another book based on his team’s out-of-state investigations.

The Fox Valley Ghost Hunters have a team that is very caring and helpful towards their clients. They investigate already well-known haunted spots to learn about what is there and why they are there, and to find answers to the afterlife. Please follow them on Facebook and enjoy all their pictures and voices and stories throughout the years. Craig wants to thank all his team’s clients and followers throughout the years and today for without their continued support and enthusiasm we would not exist.

Episode Fifty-Two: EVPs and Spirit Communication

Have you ever been making a recording in a creepy old house (like you do) and gotten a lot more than you bargained for, such as, say, disembodied voices turning up on your audio devices? Welcome to the eerie and controversial world of electronic voice phenomena (EVP), which has now become an integral part of any paranormal investigation. The internet is awash in spooky recordings of supposed voices of the dead, but how real is this phenomena, and can our video and audio technology really be used to communicate with the other side? On this installment of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny discuss EVPs and spirit communication, play some examples of EVPs, give a short history of the concept of talking to ghosts through audio devices, and hone in on some of the better known figures in the field, such as Marcello Bacci and the radio he uses to talk to spirits. Tune in to our ghostly frequency and listen for the voices, because it’s time for episode 52.

Episode Fifty: The Demon Child Haunting

It’s our fiftieth episode (cue party horn going *fweeeeet*)!!! And what better way to celebrate than with yet another one of our fun and popular breakdowns of “A Haunting” episodes! This time we’ll be discussing another one of our favorites, “Demon Child,” from season 2, which features a kid peeing in a closet and sitting on a cat, a demon named Man who pretends to be a bratty dead kid, and the ubiquitous Raccoon Man playing the dad! Thanks to everyone who has supported us through all 50 episodes so far, and we hope to have lots more shows coming in the future! But for now, Man said you could listen to episode 50 of 13 O’Clock. HE SAID IT WOULD BE FUN! 🙂

Episode Forty-Seven: The Hungry Ghosts Haunting

On episode 47, Tom and Jenny are returning to their fun recaps of “A Haunting” episodes, and this time around, they’re discussing one of the more unusual ones: “Hungry Ghosts,” which was the fifth episode of season two. The wealthy Bishop family move to a company-owned mansion in Taiwan after dad Dennis is given a promotion, but almost from the moment they set foot in the place, creepy things are afoot. Leaky walls, big-ass spiders, footsteps, voices, doors opening by themselves…it’s enough to make mom Candace summon a Taoist priest to rid the gigantic, window-heavy showplace of its pesky spirits. Don’t forget to pack up a picnic basket of fruit, incense, and cash to leave on the front lawn for the unquiet ghosts before tuning in for the latest haunting episode of 13 O’Clock.

Episode Forty-Four: A Haunting In Florida

In 2001, Edd and Beth Dunham moved into a nondescript home in Deltona, Florida, thinking it would be a great place for their family to grow. But little did they know that before long, they would begin to see apparitions and experience disturbing poltergeist activity, and in the end would come face to face with an evil entity that seemed bent on attacking their baby daughter. On this show, Tom and Jenny are returning once again to their exploration of the real stories behind the best episodes of the series “A Haunting,” and this particular case, aired in 2006, has some personal significance, since it happened very close to where Jenny grew up and to where Tom and Jenny now live, and since Tom has met Edd Dunham in real life and has spoken to him at length about the paranormal activity that befell his family. So sit back and enjoy this tale of a particularly Floridian haunting.

Episode Forty-One: The Dark Side Haunting, From the Files of Ed and Lorraine Warren

In 1978, Bobby and Addie Wilcott bought an old New England house to fix up. Little did they know that a few decades later, enough creepy shit would happen in their humble abode to warrant a pretty damn good episode of A Haunting titled “The Dark Side.” The haunting started small — doors opening and closing by themselves, a broken player piano suddenly belting out tunes willy-nilly — but eventually cockroaches, child endangerment, and the Warrens got involved. On this episode, Tom and Jenny return to their discussion/review of A Haunting episodes, talking about the re-enactment itself, and also taking another opportunity to talk about the Warrens, because you know how we always have fun doing that. Spray around some odor of sanctity and enjoy episode 41.
