Episode 265 LIVE: The Disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa

The disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa is certainly one of the most discussed and debated cases in the annals of American crime. Hoffa, who began as a labor organizer while still a teenager and eventually became one of the most powerful labor leaders in the United States, unfortunately chose to associate with some pretty unsavory characters in order to achieve some of his ends. Many people speculate that it was this involvement with certain Mafia figures that led to Hoffa vanishing in 1975. To this day, his ultimate fate and resting place remains unknown, despite multiple theories and a few deathbed confessions. Join Tom and Jenny on this twisting saga on a mobbed-up episode 265.

Episode 258 LIVE: The Disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

In March of 2014, a Boeing 777 containing 227 passengers and 12 crew members vanished while on a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Although the bulk of the wreckage has never been found, pieces of debris that have washed up on various beaches, as well as the unusual satellite data that emerged in the wake of the disappearance, suggest that the plane was deliberately flown off course and also, possibly, deliberately crashed into the ocean. What happened aboard Flight 370? Was it hijacked? Did the captain commit a horrifying type of suicide? Was the whole event some masssive cover-up? Delve into the bizarre mystery on a high-flying episode 258.

Episode 250 LIVE: The West Mesa Bone Collector

On today’s horrifying installment, we’re delving into the case of a probable serial killer who has yet to be identified. In 2009, a woman walking her dog discovered a human bone on West Mesa, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Further investigation yielded even more human remains, and police realized that there were eleven murdered women who had been dumped in this same area. The women — most of whom came from high-risk groups — had all gone missing between 2003 and 2005, and authorities suspect that one serial killer, dubbed the West Mesa Bone Collector, is likely responsible. Head out to the deserts of the Southwest with Tom and Jenny as we break down this heartbreaking case on episode 250.

Episode 247 LIVE: The Disappearance of Amelia Earhart / The Ant Hill Kids Cult

On tonight’s two-topic extravaganza, Tom and Jenny discuss two disparate but equally fascinating cases. First, we’ll discuss the disappearance of famed female aviatrix Amelia Earhart, who along with her navigator Fred Noonan, vanished somewhere in the Pacific Ocean during the final leg of her historic around-the-world flight in 1937. Then, on the second half, gird your loins and keep the liquor handy, because we’ll be talking about one of the most f*cked up cults we’ve ever heard of (and that’s saying something). Known as the Ant Hill Kids, the group was formed in 1977 by French Canadian psychopath Roch Theriault as an offshoot of the Seventh-Day Adventists, but soon descended into an unbelievable nightmare of torture, mutilation, abuse, and murder. Seriously, this story’s rough, even for us. So gather your beverage and snacks of choice, and relax for a kinda schizophrenic episode 247.

Episode 240 LIVE: The Disappearance of the Sodder Children

Back in 1945, a devastating house fire broke out on Christmas Eve at the home of the Sodder family in West Virginia. Despite their best efforts, parents George and Jennie Sodder were unable to save five of their ten children from the flames…or so they thought. As strange evidence began to mount, the Sodders became convinced that not only had the blaze at their home been deliberately set, but also that whoever was behind the crime had spirited the five children away before the flames could consume them. The tragic and eerie tale remains an unsolved mystery to this day, so put on your deerstalker hats and get ready to follow the clues with Tom and Jenny on a LIVE episode 240.

Episode 238 LIVE: The Disappearance of D.B. Cooper

On today’s daring installment, Tom and Jenny finally get around to discussing one of the most famous heists — and mysterious disappearances — in American history. In 1971, a man calling himself Dan Cooper hijacked a Boeing 727 aircraft mid-flight and subsequently jumped out of the plane with a parachute and $200,000 in ransom money, never to be seen again. Did the later-dubbed D.B. Cooper survive his audacious jump, and if so, where did he go? Strap into your chutes and get ready to skydive into the dark skies of intrigue on a LIVE episode 238. Sorry the video version is in 4 parts; the stream was being an asshole again. Sigh.

Episode 228 LIVE: The Lead Masks Case and a History of Broadmoor Hospital

It’s the day after Christmas, and all through the house, Tom and Jenny are streaming while getting quite soused. On this fun, creepy, and madcap livestream, we’re going to be discussing two very different topics (since the Patreon topic poll was a tie, so we figured what the hell). First up, we’ll be delving into the so-called Lead Masks Case, in which two Brazilian men were found dead in 1966 with lead masks over their eyes and cryptic messages left near their corpses which suggested all kinds of crazy theories, from alien intervention to a spiritualist cult. Then, we’ll be talking about the storied history of the famed British mental asylum, Broadmoor Hospital, which has been home to some of the country’s most notorious and violent criminals, from the Yorkshire Ripper to Ronnie Kray to the Stockwell Strangler, and discussing some of these famous patients. Stumble out of your post-holiday haze and spend a cheerful Boxing Day with us on episode 228.

Episode 225 LIVE: Creepy Disappearances Volume 4

On this tragic and mysterious installment of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny discuss five strange cases of eerie disappearances. First, we look into the 1991 vanishing of Boy Scout Jared Negrete, who went missing during a troop hike up Mount San Gorgonio in Southern California and left behind a chilling “last photo.” Then we talk about Andrew Gosden, the teenage boy who took a train to London from his home in North Yorkshire in 2007 and subsequently disappeared. We also cover the 2009 disappearance and possible murder of 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel; the bizarre 2013 vanishing of Connecticut family man Robert Hoagland; and finally, the utterly strange account of German vacationer Lars Mittank, who went missing after suffering a possible psychotic break while partying with friends in Bulgaria. So prepare the beverage of your choice, wrap yourself in a nice cozy blanket to stave off the winter chill, and get ready to explore some baffling missing persons mysteries on a LIVE episode 225.

Episode One Hundred Fifty Seven: The Lost Dutchman Mine and the Superstition Mountains

On this golden episode, Tom and Jenny are digging into one of the most famous tales of treasure in American history: the twisting tale of the Lost Dutchman Mine, supposedly located in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. The area was allegedly the site of an Apache curse from well before the Spanish conquest, and once gold was discovered, all kinds of strange murders and disappearances ensued. Load up your burro and head for the canyons, because there’s gold in them thar hills on Episode 157.

On this heartbreaking installment, Tom and Jenny discuss two horrific murder cases from the 1970s, both involving Girl Scouts. First is the 1977 Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders, in which three little girls were brutally butchered while on a Girl Scout camping trip. The second is the 1975 killing of Marcia Trimble, who disappeared after setting out into her neighborhood to deliver Girl Scout cookies and was found dead more than a month later. Along the way, we go off on some of our inevitable digressions, especially about Girl Scout cookies, because of course we do. Lay in your stock of Thin Mints and bust out the tissues for another true crime two-fer on episode 147.

Episode One Hundred Forty Three: The Atlas Vampire and the Murder of Catrine da Costa

On this Swedish true crime two-fer, Tom and Jenny are breaking down two grisly and mysterious murders. The first is the baffling 1932 case known simply as The Atlas Vampire, whereby a woman named Lilly Lindeström was found dead in her apartment with nearly all of her blood missing, save for a few smears on a nearby gravy ladle. The second is the 1984 killing and dismemberment of Catrine da Costa, a crime which served as the loose basis for Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Bust out the meatballs and lingonberry jam and dig out your Viking helmets and IKEA coupons, we’re popping over to Stockholm for episode 143.

Episode One Hundred Eighteen: The Wallace Case and the Murder of Nora Fuller

It’s another true crime double feature on this episode of 13 O’Clock, and we’re going back to the early days of the 20th century to discuss two bizarre, unsolved murders that are still the subject of much debate. First, the strange 1902 murder of Nora Fuller, who answered an ad for a babysitter and disappeared, only to be found dead weeks later under very mysterious circumstances. Then, we’ll discuss the infamous “Wallace Case” from 1931, called by many crime writers “the impossible murder” because of its frustrating and contradictory details that liken it to a fictional, locked-room mystery. Load up your pipe and put on your deerstalker hat as we investigate the cases comprising episode 118.

Returning to the unsolved mysteries and unsolved murders on this installment, Tom and Jenny are discussing another true crime two-top. First up, the mysterious case of the Circleville Writer, who wrote threatening letters to residents of a small Ohio town for years and may have been responsible for one murder and one attempted murder. Next, we’ll talk about the infamous case of The Doodler, an elusive and still unidentified serial killer who targeted gay men in San Francisco’s Castro district in the 1970s, luring them in by drawing their portraits. Episode One-Hundred-Ten: Mysterious Codes – Ricky McCormick, YOG’TZE, and the Voynich Manuscript

Talking about the Zodiac on last week’s show inspired us to delve into even more cases of strange codes that were never cracked. On this cryptic installment, we’re discussing three infamous incidents of mysterious ciphers: the so-called YOG’TZE case, the death of Ricky McCormick and the weird coded letters found in his pockets, and the bizarre Voynich Manuscript, written in some as-yet-undetermined language. Help Tom and Jenny decipher the clues on an enigmatic episode 110.

Here’s the link to the latest attempt to decipher the Voynich Manuscript.

Episode One-Hundred-Eight: The Boys from Yuba City, aka the American Dyatlov Pass

On today’s cold and creepy installment, Tom and Jenny are tackling an oft-requested, mysterious unexplained deaths case: the so-called Boys from Yuba City, otherwise known as the American Dyatlov Pass incident. In 1978, five young men disappeared in a snowy California forest, only to be found months later with no explanation as to how they ended up where they did or why they ended up dead. All this, plus a brief news story out of Georgia about a Jane Doe found dismembered in a landfill. Bundle up against the inclement weather and warm your frozen tootsies by the fire of episode 108.

Episode One-Hundred-Six: Mr. Cruel

On this crime-stuffed installment, Tom and Jenny are discussing the still-unapprehended Australian child rapist and murderer known only as Mr. Cruel. Similar to the Golden State Killer, Mr. Cruel is notorious for breaking into family homes clad in a mask, tying up the family, then taking one of the little girls away to rape before returning them later on. Tune in to the terrifying tale, which will commence after our introductory news story about yet another cold case murder that was recently solved with the help of DNA technology. Episode One-Hundred-Four: The Black Dahlia

It’s true crime time again on this grisly installment of 13 O’Clock, and this go-around, we’re tackling what is probably the best known unsolved murder case in American history: the horrifying slaying of the Black Dahlia. Back in 1947, dark-haired beauty Elizabeth Short was found sliced in half and drained of blood in an undeveloped Los Angeles neighborhood. Who committed such a vicious crime, and why? Theories and rumors have abounded in the more than seven decades since the murder occurred, and public fascination with the case shows no sign of abating. So listen in to our take on the notorious crime, along with an opening news story about a Florida cold case from 1994 — the brutal murder of Amy Gellert — and many, MANY of our famous digressions. Settle in for the long, blood-drenched saga of episode 104.

Episode ONE HUNDRED: True Crime Variety Special with Guests, Video, Kitties, and More!

Yes, we’ve reached an important milestone, folks: it’s 13 O’Clock’s big, bad ONE-HUNDREDTH episode! For months, we threw around different ideas about what to do for it, and in the end, we just decided to give our listeners more of what they seem to love most about the show: drunken rambling and horrific true crime stories. Plus, for those tuning in on YouTube, you will get to see videos of us in all our glory, plus little snippets of video of our kitties, and a 360 of our little office/studio, where the magic happens (the audio version doesn’t have video, obviously, but is still awesome and fun, so don’t feel left out)!

We also have special guests on the show: Shana, Eric, and zombie baby Demonika of BattleGlitta, who drank and laughed along with us as we delved into twenty of the most eerie and unpleasant true crime stories I could find. Creepiest disappearances! Horrible massacres of entire families! IT’S A MADHOUSE! Plus it’s like three hours long, so y’know…everyone take a potty break and gather all the snacks you’ll need before you settle in for the very long, vaguely incoherent, irreverent, and half-drunk installment of 13 O’Clock that IS episode 100. Hope you guys enjoy…we couldn’t do it without you! 🙂

Episode Ninety-Six: Robert Stack Attack! A Wide-Ranging Tribute to Unsolved Mysteries

One of our favorite TV shows of the 80s and 90s was Unsolved Mysteries, particularly during the Robert Stack era. As the show was such a beloved touchstone for us and inspired us to make the 13 O’Clock Podcast the crazy combination of paranormal, true crime, and weird history stories that it is, we thought it only fitting to discuss this cultural icon on our own little show. On this tangent-filled and far-reaching episode, we get into a brief history of Unsolved Mysteries, some fun facts about the show, and a few of our favorite featured cases, including some that the show helped solve. We also weave in digressions about D.B. Cooper, Son of Sam, the Beale ciphers, the inaccuracy of witness testimony, and much, much more! All this, plus some awesome listener-contributed ghost stories in our news segment! So sit back and listen to this homage to a childhood favorite, and you may be able to help solve the mystery presented on episode 96.

Episode Ninety-Three: The Family Murders

We’re going back to Australian true crime for episode 93, and boy, this one’s a doozy. Remember when we talked about the Wanda Beach murders and the disappearance of the Beaumont children back on episode 77? We kinda mentioned today’s topic on that show, because there were some suspects in common, but here’s the complete, horrible story of the so-called “Family Murders,” which took place in Adelaide, South Australia in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Seems there was an alleged cabal of wealthy, prominent older men in the city who would cruise around, pick up teenage boys, and do unspeakable things to them before dumping them by the side of the road. This one’s kinda rough, so y’know, have some cute kitten videos on standby for afterward. Also, we’re covering a recent news story whereby a suspect in a Washington State double murder case from 1987 has been identified using the same genealogy technique used to capture the Golden State Killer. It’s true crime from Down Under and Up Over (I guess…?) on a grim and gruesome episode 93.

Episode Ninety-One: The Long Island Serial Killer

It’s a serial killer extravaganza on this horrific installment! Tom and Jenny are looking into a suspected and infamous serial killer case that is still ongoing. In December of 2010, while looking for a missing person in Long Island, New York, police stumbled across four bodies in burlap sacks, and a few months later, discovered six more nearby. The unknown perpetrator known as the Long Island Serial Killer, the Gilgo Beach Killer, or the Craigslist Ripper is thought to be responsible for between ten to sixteen murders in and around Long Island between the years of 1996 to 2010, and may still be operating today. Tune in as we discuss what is known about the case so far, and also have a listen to our news segment, in which we not only give the latest updates on recently apprehended Golden State Killer suspect Joseph DeAngelo, but also talk a little bit about recently deceased British serial killer Dennis Nilsen, as well as have a brief discussion about the weirdly specific jobs that serial killers seem attracted to. Lock your doors and windows as 13 O’Clock tries to catch a killer on episode 91.

Episode Eighty-Eight: Serial Killers Jack the Stripper and Bible John

NOTE: We’re all about the digressions again this episode, so if you just want the serial killer stuff, skip ahead to about twenty minutes in. I’m telling you right here, so don’t complain, hahaha.

It’s true crime time again on this installment of 13 O’Clock, and this go-around we’re discussing two of Britain’s most infamous serial killers who were never caught. First up is the elusive Jack the Stripper, responsible for several murders of prostitutes in London spanning the years from 1959 to 1965. Then we’ll be talking about the mysterious Bible John, who murdered at least three women in Glasgow in 1968 and 1969 after meeting them at one particular dance hall, but who may be tied in to one of Scotland’s most prolific serial killers. All this, plus some recent news stories about exploding hams, getting tasered for Jesus, and attic-dwelling ex-boyfriends. Get ready to investigate with Tom and Jenny on a gore-soaked episode 88.

Episode Eighty-Three: Flannan Isles Lighthouse and the Death of Elisa Lam

We’re talking about two creepy unsolved mysteries on today’s long, slightly drunken, tangent-filled installment! First up (well, about eighteen minutes into the show, haha), we discuss the infamous disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from Flannan Isles Lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides in 1900. Were they swept away by a freak wave, did some foul play befall them, or were they spirited away by ghosts or sea monsters? On our second segment, we talk about the tragic events of early 2013, when a young woman named Elisa Lam went missing from her LA hotel, and worries about her fate mounted after some eerie elevator footage showed her behaving in a very strange fashion. Days later, her body was found in a large water tank on the hotel’s roof. Was she the victim of murder, suicide, or a tragic accident? Or was there some other even more sinister reason for her bizarre death? All this, plus a fun news story about people’s Amazon Alexas seemingly becoming possessed by dark forces, and digressions about the Mammoth Mountain poltergeist, sexbots, the universal Krusselsphere, why you should never go in the ocean for any reason, and much more! Dive into the murky and mysterious waters of the unknown with Tom and Jenny, on episode 83 of 13 O’Clock.

Episode Sixty-Two: Vanished! Five Creepy Cases of Unsolved Missing Persons

Murders are horrific and terrifying, sure, but there’s something that’s somehow even creepier about people who simply vanish without a trace. Were they murdered, did they die in an accident, or did they wander off of their own accord? And how to make sense of the strange clues that they often leave behind? On this episode, Tom and Jenny are continuing their eerie October theme with several of the most unsettling missing persons cases of recent times, including the case of Tara Calico and the disturbing Polaroid found in a parking lot, the bizarre disappearance of a mother and daughter from the same place nearly a year apart, the eighteen-year-old boy who vanished after leaving work and whose abandoned car was discovered with the headlights on and a live puppy inside, and many other ominous and perplexing details about people who just up and disappeared one day. Fix your location definitively in space and time and settle in for episode 62.

Also, if you have a TRUE creepy story that happened to you or someone you know (it doesn’t have to be paranormal, just scary), please email it to me at gravecake@gmail.com and we might feature it on our special Halloween episode!

Episode Fifty-Nine: A Haunting in Georgia – Wyrick House and Mr. Gordy

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of our reviews of A Haunting episodes, so we decided to go back to the beginning and delve into the case behind one of the pilot episodes, “A Haunting in Georgia” (which was also the basis for the horror movie A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia). The Wyrick family begin to experience paranormal activity in their new home in Ellerslie, Georgia, mostly centering around their daughter Heidi seeing a friendly old man in the backyard who she called Mr. Gordy, as well as another man with blood on his shirt that she called Con. Later on, things got a bit more sinister with the arrival of a creepy hooded figure who seemed to wish the family harm. On this episode, Tom and Jenny talk about the episode of A Haunting as well as the witness accounts of the real case, and how it was (poorly) adapted to the big screen. Start your October off right with the ghostly, haunted 59th installment of 13 O’Clock.

Episode Thirty-Two: Horror In Room 1046 – The Unsolved Murder of Roland T. Owen

In January of 1935, a young man checked into a hotel in Kansas City under the pseudonym Roland T. Owen, with only a hairbrush, a comb, and a tube of toothpaste to his name. A couple of days later, he was found naked, bound and obviously tortured in his blood-splashed room. Who was this murdered man with the fake name? Why was he constantly sitting in the dark? Who was the mysterious “Don” he talked to on the phone? Why was he running down the street clad only in pants and an undershirt? Who anonymously paid for his funeral and a bouquet of roses? Who sent cryptic typed letters to his mother months after his death?

Everyone loves an unsolved murder, and the mystery of room 1046 is one of the eeriest unsolved crimes in American history. On this episode, Tom and Jenny give a timeline of the bizarre events leading up to the man’s death, and speculate as to what might have befallen the doomed occupant of the Hotel President.

Episode Eight: The Original Night Stalker

Most people have heard of Richard Ramirez, the infamous serial killer known as the Night Stalker. But what many people don’t know is that a decade before Ramirez commenced his reign of terror, a much more brutal and prolific serial killer and rapist stalked the upper-middle-class neighborhoods of California, from Sacramento to Irvine. This man, known alternately as the East Area Rapist, the Golden State Killer, the Diamond Knot Killer, or the Original Night Stalker, has never been apprehended, and may still be on the loose. On this episode, Tom and Jenny discuss his horrific crimes and speculate as to why he was never caught. 2016, in fact, marks the 40th anniversary of the Original Night Stalker’s first known crime, and the FBI have redoubled their efforts to track the guy down, offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his capture and conviction.

Episode Seven: The Mammoth Mountain Poltergeist

On this episode, Tom and Jenny discuss the case that started it all. Jenny was primarily a horror writer until Tom told her about a horrifying poltergeist experience he had endured in 1982, when he was thirteen years old. Objects moved in impossible ways, creepy noises like human voices came out of thin air, and an eerie presence seemed to watch him and his family at every turn, and followed them to a total of three locations. Tom gives a rundown of some of the phenomena, using current pictures of one of the locations in order to jog his memory. Tom and Jenny also discuss the poltergeist activity that rekindled at their own home more than thirty years after the original incidents. If you’d like to know more about the case, Tom and Jenny wrote a book about it called The Mammoth Mountain Poltergeist, and they’ve also been on a few podcasts talking about the details, such as here and here.

Episode Five: Eerie Espionage – Numbers Stations, Somerton Man, Isdal Woman

Everybody loves suave superspy James Bond, but sometimes international espionage can be a hell of a lot less glamorous, and even downright disturbing. On this spooky spy-themed episode, Tom and Jenny discuss the creepy weirdness of numbers stations, plus the intensely fucked-up and mysterious unsolved murders of probable secret agents The Somerton Man (aka the Tamam Shud case) and The Isdal Woman.
