Episode One Hundred Forty Nine: Richard Ramirez – The Night Stalker

On this horrific installment, Tom and Jenny are discussing one of the most notorious American serial killers of the 1980s: Richard Ramirez, aka The Night Stalker. This dirtbag terrorized southern California throughout 1984 and 1985, breaking into random houses and raping, murdering, and pillaging wherever he went, completely indiscriminate in his choice of victims. He is also infamous for being an avowed Satanist who seemed to genuinely believe that Satan was going to protect him from getting caught (spoiler alert: nope). Lock your doors, hide your valuables, and keep your loved ones close as we unfold the harrowing tale on episode 149.

Episode One Hundred Forty Six: A Criminal History of Norwegian Black Metal

On this headbanging installment, Tom and Jenny are taking a meandering journey through the early black metal scene, and discussing some of the notorious crimes for which some members of Norwegian black metal bands became infamous, such as the rash of church burnings in Norway, the murder of Euronymous (of Mayhem) and the killing of a gay man in the streets of Lillehammer by Faust, a member of the band Emperor. Tom also waxes nostalgic about his early heavy metal days! Raise a horned hand in salute to episode 146.

Episode Fifty-Six: Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan

Anton LaVey, infamous founder of the Church of Satan and a consummate showman, brought his particular brand of philosophical occult belief to wider acceptance in the 1960s. In its heyday, the Church of Satan boasted some notable Hollywood names and respected writers among its membership, though after the Manson Family murders of 1969, Satanism began to lose some of its rebellious allure. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny delve into the lingering legend of Anton LaVey, separating the truth from the fiction and discussing his influence on American culture throughout the 60s to the present day. Raise a horned hand in salute to episode 56.

By the way, sorry about some of the weird sound anomalies we got on this episode…must be the devil or Anton LaVey’s ghost fucking with my audio. Or hurricane voodoo. 😦

Episode Twenty-Four: Fun Facts and Myths About Aleister Crowley

Aleister Crowley is one of the most fascinating figures of the 20th century. Known as “The Great Beast 666” or “The Wickedest Man in the World,” facts and rumors about Crowley’s occult shenanigans have become so intertwined that it’s now impossible to separate the reality from the legend. On this episode, Tom and Jenny examine some of their favorite facts, anecdotes, myths, and conspiracies about Crowley, including the possibility that he was a Jack the Ripper copycat killer who carried out the Curse of King Tut, that he fought off a female vampire sent to attack him by a rival, that he might have been Barbara Bush’s father, that his writings were the inspiration for Scientology, and that he once helmed a disastrous mountaineering expedition that ended in four deaths.

Episode Eleven: “Real” Demonic Possession and Exorcisms

The power of Christ should compel you to listen to episode 11 of the 13 O’Clock Podcast, wherein Tom and Jenny break down a few notable cases of supposed demon possession, like the tale of Roland Doe/Robbie Mannheim (basis for the film/novel The Exorcist) and Anneliese Michel (basis for The Exorcism of Emily Rose). We also discuss a few notable murder cases in which demon possession was an actual defense (yeah, that didn’t work out so well) and a few other bits and bobs about so-called “demonic” hauntings.

Episode Two: Satanic Panic!

In the 1980s, the moral scolds of America were suddenly whipped into a frenzy, convinced that everything from Dungeons and Dragons to heavy metal music to Saturday morning cartoons were irrefutable proof that an organized cabal of Satanists was roaming the land, kidnapping and molesting children, sacrificing puppies, and eating juicy babies with a side of devilled eggs. On this episode, Tom and Jenny break down (and make fun of) the tragicomic period of recent history known as the Satanic Panic.
