Episode 333 LIVE: Paranormal-Palooza! Smurl Haunting, San Pedro Case & South Shields Poltergeist

It’s a paranormal-palooza on this episode of 13 O’Clock, as Tom and Jenny delve into three fairly well-known haunting cases. First, we’ll be talking about the Smurl case from the 1970s, in which a Pennsylvania family claimed they were tormented by demonic entities in their West Pittson duplex. Then we’ll discuss the San Pedro haunting, in which a woman named Jackie Hernandez endured what seemed to be a terrifying poltergeist infestation in her California home in 1989. And lastly, we’ll talk about the South Shields Poltergeist, a series of incidents that took place in northeast England in 2005 and 2006. Get into ghostly gear on an ooky and spooky episode 333.

Episode 302 LIVE: Houska Castle and the Doris Bither Entity Haunting

It’s a paranormal extravaganza on this spooky installment of 13 O’Clock! First up, we’ll be discussing the mysterious Houska Castle, a 13th-century Gothic structure in the Czech Republic which was supposedly built over an actual gateway to Hell. Then we’ll return to the fascinating case of Doris Bither, who was the real woman behind the character of Carla Moran in the 1982 horror film The Entity. In 1974, Doris approached parapsychologist Dr. Barry Taff, claiming that her house was haunted, and further, that she’s been repeatedly sexually assaulted by the spirits dwelling in her Culver City, California home. Over the course of the investigation, a number of eerie photographs were taken that seem to suggest the presence of some inexplicable phenomena. Join Tom and Jenny as we travel down the bottomless pit and see what spirits we can unearth on a ghastly and ghoulish episode 302.

Episode One Hundred Thirty Nine: The Black Hope Curse

Hey, y’know in the movie Poltergeist, when all the trouble started because someone “only moved the headstones?” Well, who knew that it was based on a real event? We didn’t, until now. In the early 1980s, a couple bought a house in a suburb of Houston, Texas and started digging a pool in their backyard when what should they come across but a couple of bodies in pine boxes. Turns out that the entire neighborhood was built slap bang on top of a forgotten cemetery, and according to several residents of the street, the dead people were NOT happy about their former resting place being disturbed, because a shitload of paranormal activity allegedly ensued. Tune in to this fun, spooky exploration of the so-called Black Hope Horror and the bizarre phenomenon of abandoned cemeteries turning up in the darnedest places.

Episode One Hundred Twenty Five: Skinwalker Ranch

Back on the paranormal tip this week, Tom and Jenny are tackling one of the most talked-about and reportedly active locations for UFO and paranormal sightings in the United States: the 480-acre area of northeastern Utah known as the Skinwalker Ranch. The Ute Native American tribe allegedly has tales of skinwalkers in the region going back centuries, but beginning in the 1950s, the Skinwalker Ranch has also been the site of numerous reported sightings of everything from UFOs, to ghosts and poltergeist activity, to cattle mutilations, to portals to other dimensions, to cryptids of various types, including a gigantic wolf that is supposedly impervious to bullets. Travel down the vortex of interplanetary weirdness as we examine the Skinwalker Ranch on episode 125.

Episode Seventy-Three: The Belmez Faces & Chase Vault, Plus Phoenix Poltergeist

It’s a three-pronged paranormal extravaganza on this episode of 13 O’Clock! First up, on our “news of the weird” segment, we’ll be discussing a recent news story out of Phoenix, Arizona in which a family claims to be the target of a poltergeist who throws things around their home and writes in Yiddish on their walls. Then we’ll be tackling the main topics of the episode, and going into two of the most famous paranormal cases of the 20th century: the mysterious Belmez Faces of Spain, and the infamous “moving coffins” of the Chase Vault in Barbados. Park your caskets on the smiling tiles and tune in for episode 73.

Episode Sixty-Seven: The Sallie House Haunting

On this ghostly episode, we’re returning to our study of paranormal cases featured on the program A Haunting. This time we examine the infamous Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas, specifically the two-year residence of the Pickman family, who allegedly experienced objects moving around and catching fire, the sighting of apparitions, physical attacks, and strange personality changes. The haunting at the Sallie House has been attributed to the ghost of a seven-year-old girl and perhaps that of her angry mother, but accounts differ, and Tom and Jenny discuss the case and the way it was portrayed on A Haunting, trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. Put all your teddy bears in a circle and commune with the spirit of episode 67.

Episode Sixty-Five: Poltergeists Who Play With Fire – Canneto di Caronia and More!

A poltergeist infestation can be a pain in the ass at the best of times, but what happens when the manifestations cause actual, massive property damage? That’s allegedly what happened in these six tales of fire-starting poltergeists. Tom and Jenny discuss the mysterious town-wide outbreak of fires in Canneto di Caronia, Italy (and how they may have a rational explanation after all), as well as five more infamous cases of “fire spooks” that occurred at Caledonia Mills, Nova Scotia; Odon, Indiana; Macomb, Illinois; Bladenboro, North Carolina; and Orland Hills, Illinois. Were these fires caused by some supernatural entity, by some kid with latent pyrokinetic powers, or by someone with a box full of matches and a penchant for destructive pranks? Have your graham crackers and marshmallows at the ready as we heat up for episode 65.

Episode Fifty-Nine: A Haunting in Georgia – Wyrick House and Mr. Gordy

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of our reviews of A Haunting episodes, so we decided to go back to the beginning and delve into the case behind one of the pilot episodes, “A Haunting in Georgia” (which was also the basis for the horror movie A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia). The Wyrick family begin to experience paranormal activity in their new home in Ellerslie, Georgia, mostly centering around their daughter Heidi seeing a friendly old man in the backyard who she called Mr. Gordy, as well as another man with blood on his shirt that she called Con. Later on, things got a bit more sinister with the arrival of a creepy hooded figure who seemed to wish the family harm. On this episode, Tom and Jenny talk about the episode of A Haunting as well as the witness accounts of the real case, and how it was (poorly) adapted to the big screen. Start your October off right with the ghostly, haunted 59th installment of 13 O’Clock.

Also, if you have a TRUE creepy story that happened to you or someone you know (it doesn’t have to be paranormal, just scary), please email it to me at gravecake@gmail.com and we might feature it on our special Halloween episode!

Episode Fifty-Two: EVPs and Spirit Communication

Have you ever been making a recording in a creepy old house (like you do) and gotten a lot more than you bargained for, such as, say, disembodied voices turning up on your audio devices? Welcome to the eerie and controversial world of electronic voice phenomena (EVP), which has now become an integral part of any paranormal investigation. The internet is awash in spooky recordings of supposed voices of the dead, but how real is this phenomena, and can our video and audio technology really be used to communicate with the other side? On this installment of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny discuss EVPs and spirit communication, play some examples of EVPs, give a short history of the concept of talking to ghosts through audio devices, and hone in on some of the better known figures in the field, such as Marcello Bacci and the radio he uses to talk to spirits. Tune in to our ghostly frequency and listen for the voices, because it’s time for episode 52.

Episode Fifty: The Demon Child Haunting

It’s our fiftieth episode (cue party horn going *fweeeeet*)!!! And what better way to celebrate than with yet another one of our fun and popular breakdowns of “A Haunting” episodes! This time we’ll be discussing another one of our favorites, “Demon Child,” from season 2, which features a kid peeing in a closet and sitting on a cat, a demon named Man who pretends to be a bratty dead kid, and the ubiquitous Raccoon Man playing the dad! Thanks to everyone who has supported us through all 50 episodes so far, and we hope to have lots more shows coming in the future! But for now, Man said you could listen to episode 50 of 13 O’Clock. HE SAID IT WOULD BE FUN! 🙂

Episode Forty-Four: A Haunting In Florida

In 2001, Edd and Beth Dunham moved into a nondescript home in Deltona, Florida, thinking it would be a great place for their family to grow. But little did they know that before long, they would begin to see apparitions and experience disturbing poltergeist activity, and in the end would come face to face with an evil entity that seemed bent on attacking their baby daughter. On this show, Tom and Jenny are returning once again to their exploration of the real stories behind the best episodes of the series “A Haunting,” and this particular case, aired in 2006, has some personal significance, since it happened very close to where Jenny grew up and to where Tom and Jenny now live, and since Tom has met Edd Dunham in real life and has spoken to him at length about the paranormal activity that befell his family. So sit back and enjoy this tale of a particularly Floridian haunting.

Episode Thirty-Nine: The Haunting of Summerwind

Some of our listeners might remember the episode of the TV show A Haunting which was titled “The Haunting of Summerwind.” The house called Summerwind, in fact, is better known as the Lamont Mansion, and a bunch of spooky legends surround the place. Even though the house was destroyed by fire in 1988, ghost hunters in Wisconsin still claim that the area is haunted, and on this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny not only discuss the history and stories about the Lamont Mansion, but also how the facts differ from the episode of A Haunting (which, incidentally, is Tom’s very favorite episode of the show). We also discuss our feelings about other paranormal shows currently on the airwaves.

Episode Thirty-Eight: Case Files of Ed and Lorraine Warren

They’re not saying it’s demons…but it’s the Warrens, so yeah, it’s always demons. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny have an entertaining and digressive discussion about OG ghost hunters/demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren and the controversies surrounding them, as well as some of the high-profile cases they were involved in, such as the Haunting in Connecticut, the Smurl family, Annabelle the haunted doll, Amityville, and the case behind The Conjuring. And remember kids: everything is demons. DEMONS!

Episode Thirty-One: The Haunting at the Black Mausoleum (aka The Mackenzie Poltergeist)

Edinburgh’s Greyfriars Kirkyard is famous for many things, including being the final resting place of one of Scotland’s most reviled historical figures, Lord Advocate Sir George Mackenzie.

In 1998, a hapless homeless man fell through the floor of Mackenzie’s tomb – known as the Black Mausoleum – and apparently unleashed a paranormal shitstorm that continues to this day. Hundreds of visitors to the tomb have reported all sorts of terrifying events and injuries taking place at the Black Mausoleum, and the supernatural onslaught has evidently spread to encompass surrounding homes, and even allegedly follows tourists back to their hotels.

On this episode, Tom and Jenny discuss the fascinating case of the Mackenzie Poltergeist of the Black Mausoleum, and along the way wander off into inexplicable digressions about Casey Kasem’s Top 40, Bigfoot-themed reality shows, peeing on the Blarney Stone, and 80s-era video games featuring butt horking. Just listen, it will make sense then. (Not really.)

Episode Eleven: “Real” Demonic Possession and Exorcisms

The power of Christ should compel you to listen to episode 11 of the 13 O’Clock Podcast, wherein Tom and Jenny break down a few notable cases of supposed demon possession, like the tale of Roland Doe/Robbie Mannheim (basis for the film/novel The Exorcist) and Anneliese Michel (basis for The Exorcism of Emily Rose). We also discuss a few notable murder cases in which demon possession was an actual defense (yeah, that didn’t work out so well) and a few other bits and bobs about so-called “demonic” hauntings.

Episode Seven: The Mammoth Mountain Poltergeist

On this episode, Tom and Jenny discuss the case that started it all. Jenny was primarily a horror writer until Tom told her about a horrifying poltergeist experience he had endured in 1982, when he was thirteen years old. Objects moved in impossible ways, creepy noises like human voices came out of thin air, and an eerie presence seemed to watch him and his family at every turn, and followed them to a total of three locations. Tom gives a rundown of some of the phenomena, using current pictures of one of the locations in order to jog his memory. Tom and Jenny also discuss the poltergeist activity that rekindled at their own home more than thirty years after the original incidents. If you’d like to know more about the case, Tom and Jenny wrote a book about it called The Mammoth Mountain Poltergeist, and they’ve also been on a few podcasts talking about the details, such as here and here.
