Episode 300 LIVE: Ned Kelly

It’s difficult to overstate how all-encompassing the figure of Ned Kelly is to Australian culture. The infamous bushranger, or rural outlaw, cut a swath of robbery and violence across Victoria and New South Wales in the 19th century, accompanied by his gang, who in later years kitted themselves out in homemade bulletproof armor to protect themselves during police shootouts. Because Ned and the Kelly gang targeted the police, the government of Victoria, and the British Empire, and because he wrote an impassioned letter justifying his crimes and seeking justice for his family and other members of the rural poor, Kelly became something of a folk hero, with sympathizers throughout the land who helped him evade capture. To this day, the myth of Ned Kelly looms large, and stands as a distillation of the independent and anti-authoritarian spirit of the Australian populace. The legendary bandit has been the subject of countless films, books, paintings, and songs over the years, and now Tom and Jenny are going down under to talk about him on a wild and woolly episode 300.

Episode 290 LIVE: The Death of Azaria Chamberlain (The Dingo Ate My Baby Case)

Most people, particularly those who grew up during the 1980s, are familiar with the pop culture phrase, “A dingo ate my baby!” What many people may not know is that this line, often used as a joke, refers to a very real and unbelievably tragic event. Back in 1980, at Uluru in the Northern Territory of Australia, the Chamberlain family was on a camping trip when the unimaginable happened: a dingo apparently nosed its way into the tent where nine-week-old Azaria Chamberlain was sleeping and carried the infant off. The body was never found, though some of the child’s clothing was eventually discovered. As if that event wasn’t horrible enough, the media, a large segment of the public, and the authorities came to believe that the baby’s mother Lindy had actually murdered the infant and used the dingo story as a coverup. This belief — later called into question — led to a conviction and a prison sentence, and might be perhaps one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in Australian legal history. Travel Down Under with Tom and Jenny as they look into this heartbreaking case on a wild and woeful episode 290.

Episode One Hundred Sixty Eight: Ivan Milat and the Backpacker Murders

On this installment of 13 O’Clock, Tom and jenny are returning to the true crime well to discuss the horrific case of one of Australia’s most prolific and vicious serial killers. Ivan Milat, known as the Backpacker Killer, brutally murdered at least seven young people vacationing in New South Wales, Australia, for seemingly no reason other than his own sadistic pleasure. It’s also believed that a few of his siblings may have allegedly helped him out in his sickening escapades, and his crimes were so egregious that he served as the inspiration for the 2005 Australian horror flick Wolf Creek. Keep to the main roads and suppress the urge to hitchhike, because the highways and forests are teeming with monsters on episode 168.

Episode One-Hundred-Six: Mr. Cruel

On this crime-stuffed installment, Tom and Jenny are discussing the still-unapprehended Australian child rapist and murderer known only as Mr. Cruel. Similar to the Golden State Killer, Mr. Cruel is notorious for breaking into family homes clad in a mask, tying up the family, then taking one of the little girls away to rape before returning them later on. Tune in to the terrifying tale, which will commence after our introductory news story about yet another cold case murder that was recently solved with the help of DNA technology. Lock your doors and windows and settle in for the creepy crime saga that is episode 106.

Episode One-Hundred-Two: The Snowtown Murders

On today’s soul-killing installment, we’re tackling what is probably one of the most notorious series of slayings in recent Australian history: the so-called Snowtown Murders, also known as the Bodies in Barrels murders. This horrific convulsion of torture and murder from the 1990s was committed by a ringleader named John Bunting and his extended group of henchmen, who targeted people they perceived as gay or “pedophiles,” and the crimes have been the subject of numerous documentaries in Australia, as well as a 2011 feature film. And if that topic wasn’t depressing enough, we’re also gonna talk about the ongoing case of the Croydon Cat Killer in the UK on our news segment, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: some chode (or chodes) who gets his jollies from slaughtering kitty cats and bunnies. Keep the liquor handy and buckle in for a rough ride on episode 102.

Episode Ninety-Three: The Family Murders

We’re going back to Australian true crime for episode 93, and boy, this one’s a doozy. Remember when we talked about the Wanda Beach murders and the disappearance of the Beaumont children back on episode 77? We kinda mentioned today’s topic on that show, because there were some suspects in common, but here’s the complete, horrible story of the so-called “Family Murders,” which took place in Adelaide, South Australia in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Seems there was an alleged cabal of wealthy, prominent older men in the city who would cruise around, pick up teenage boys, and do unspeakable things to them before dumping them by the side of the road. This one’s kinda rough, so y’know, have some cute kitten videos on standby for afterward. Also, we’re covering a recent news story whereby a suspect in a Washington State double murder case from 1987 has been identified using the same genealogy technique used to capture the Golden State Killer. It’s true crime from Down Under and Up Over (I guess…?) on a grim and gruesome episode 93.

Episode Seventy-Seven: Wanda Beach Murders and the Beaumont Children, Plus Florida Man Strikes Again

It’s another true crime double feature on 13 O’Clock, and we’re featuring two infamous crimes from 1960s Australia. First up, the horrific slayings of Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock on Wanda Beach in 1965, and then the mysterious disappearance and probable murder of the Beaumont children from 1966. Before that, our news segment focuses on a typical “Florida Man” crime, about a man who was into child porn and then got into even bigger trouble trying to hire a hit man. It’s a special kind of stupid, trust me. So put on your deerstalker hats and get ready to investigate some unsolved crimes with Tom and Jenny on a bloody and tragic episode 77.
